Curtis Corner Middle School:  Creating a Culture for School Safety

Multi-faceted Prevention/Intervention Strategies:     


Personalization--Establishing a culture grounded in trusting relationships

  * Teaming; learning centers
  * School-wide values: civility, caring and respect for the rights of others
  * Student Council—input from students
  * Visibility of Principal, Assistant Principal and Staff members

Academic Support

  * School counselors meet weekly with teams to discuss student issues
  * Principal meets weekly with teams
  * Teacher Support Team—early screening and identification of problems
  * Parent/Team Meetings
  * Weekly Progress Reports for at-risk students
  * Strong connections with special education teacher and team members
  * Remedial Reading Program

Support Services

  * Weekly Consult Team meeting--administrators, nurse, counselors, psychologist, social worker

  * Family Service of RI Pilot Program– Matt Roman (liaison) joins us weekly at Consult Team mtgs.
  * Consultation/Partnership with juvenile officer
  * Outside consultation with professionals in community
  * One on one counseling/small group counseling
  * Crisis Team—assesses critical situations and develops plan
  * Modified School Day  - Students are able to continue school work
  * STEP program (Systematic Training for Effective Parenting)

Positive Student Recognition

  * Honor Roll Assemblies
  * National Junior Honor Society
  * Team recognition of students

Substance Prevention

  * Student Assistance Counselor
  * Teen Task Force
  * Project Northland offered during health classes

Discipline

  * Student Planner—contains behavioral expectations, updated annually.  Parental signature required.

  * Individual Behavior Management Plans
  * Firm, Fair and Corrective Discipline with parent contact
  * Anti-harassment policy
  * Assemblies; team meetings with students

Safety Education/Programs

  * Bullying prevention program:  thematic units; pamphlet, assemblies, videos, discussions, posters
  * Clubs, intramurals, interscholastic activities which promote  a healthy lifestyle
  * iSafe Internet Safety program
  * Support from PTO for student programs

Routine Building Safety Procedures:  locked doors, parent/contact identification, visitor passes, 2-way radios, evacuation and fire drills, visitor sign-in
